Thesis Thursday with Dylan Hutchinson

My name is Dylan Hutchison. I am a fourth-year undergraduate at the University of Arizona, majoring in Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (Neurobiology emphasis), and minor in both Chemistry & Biochemistry. I had entered UBRP via the Neuroscience & Cognitive Science Summer Research Program (NSCS-SRP), a sister-group of UBRP for NSCS projects, last summer. I had done my work under the mentorship of Dr. Indraneel Ghosh in the department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, whereby I worked on engineering split proteins called phosphatases that could later be used to discern important bio-chemical processes called signaling pathways that have profound impacts in all cells. The proteins in particular that I was working with had important roles in cellular and molecular neurobiology. After working with UBRP, I have fallen in love with the program. There is truly no other undergraduate research internship that provides the flexibility, friendliness, professional advice and opportunities than does UBRP. It is a truly amazing experience that I would recommend any undergraduate interested in research to apply to, as it may change their view of the world entirely.

Before deciding that research was right for me, I had been a serious pre-medical student for about two years, as the curriculum gave me the discipline to redouble my academic efforts, engage in civil services, and make a difference in my community. It has been a wonderful experience and I have loved helping others. However, following my experiences in UBRP, I have begun to realize that I belong in science, and that science avocation and work is the way that I can make a difference in the world. After spending some time in an insect neurobiology lab under the mentorship of Dr. Wulfila Gronenberg, and doing field-sampling of arachnids, I realized that my passions lie ultimately in doing environmental work. Following my love for chemical laboratory research, I intend to complete my senior honor’s thesis under the mentorship of Dr. Jon Chorover of the department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science, whereby I will be studying environmental impacts of the element and neurotoxin lead. I intend to continue onto graduate work in environmental chemistry

The University of Arizona’s Undergraduate Biology Research Program is partnering with KXCI 91.3 to produce “Thesis Thursday,” a weekly segment featuring student researchers talking about their undergraduate thesis projects, or research projects while working with University professors. Students describe their research, their overall goals and career interests and where they think their research will lead. As well, they get a chance to share the music and interests that motivate them.
